This 32-week, high school-level course will give your student the opportunity to explore classic American literature and enjoy dynamic class discussions.   Literary texts will be studied within a historical and cultural context and will be discussed over a 2-4 week period.  Students will broaden their writing “toolbox” and get writing practice. However, a basic understanding of grammar and sentence structure is required. This course is a college preparatory class and is eligible to meet the requirements for high school English credit (1 credit hour).  Future classes (planned for subsequent years): British Literature.

Books we’ll read:
Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Scarlet Letter, Walden, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, To Kill A Mockingbird, Nathan Coulter. We will also read several short stories which are in the public domain and can be read online or downloaded.  Links to these will be provided in class.

Other Materials: a materials list will be provided prior to our first day.
